Mansfield Park

Another Austin classic will be playing tonight at 9pm on PBS. I am anxious to see how this one turns out. I read it last summer and I am nervous because in the previews the characters seem modern and very Hollywoodish and so I hope they don't butcher this book. I''ll let you know how it goes!

Well, that one wasn't the best! The first two weeks I really loved them but Mansfield park was a flop...you should escape reality to my house...I swear it's like the Twillight Zone over here!!

Help Andrea! I've read one Austen book - "Sense and Sensibility" which I picked up while I was in Switzerland and found it to be totally silly! The comings and goings of all these frivolous people who faint and wallow and gossip and social climb seemed like a waste of time! Since then I haven't been able to pick up another Jane Austen book. I know everyone loves her and I'm willing to give her another try but I would appreciate a recommendation so I have better luck this time around.

Lauren...I know what you mean it takes a little while to get into them. Just remember that they didn't have any choices. Women couldn't own property and couldn't speak their mind very openly. They were very dependent on men, usually marrying someone they barely knew and may never love! So when they find real love it's rare. I like Pride and Prejudice and Emma. But bear with them, they are similar to Sense and Sensibility in their language and social customs. What I think people relate most to today is women who are smart and unwilling to fall into the "norm." Austen's heroines usually are different than the silly women of the time. Well, Good luck and don't hate me if you don't like them...I am a sucker for love stories!

Thanks! I'm gonna give "Pride and Prejudice" a go, based on your recommendation and the fact that it seems to be her most popular, most famous and most adored. I appreciate your insights and will bear them in mind as I read. Wish me luck!
